Comment on Rio Olympics Opening Ceremony by The Green Swan.
I’m looking forward to the games too! My wife used to swim and loves watching that. But the lesser followed sport I’m looking forward to is wrestling. Dan Dennis is our wrestler at 57 kg freestyle and he has a very interesting backstory. He left wrestling completely and traveled around the country living out of his van for years. Wrestling slowly crept back into his life and now he’s representing his nation in the Olympics! I wish him the best.

I Found the Perfect Mountain Cabin Vacation Home
I think that’s a great way to look at it, FS, using the 4% rule to back into the invested capital necessary to sustain that addition to your lifestyle. There is a lot to admire about owning a mountain home. It’s gorgeous, peaceful, and on and on. I’d love one myself when I retire one day. But I often come back to the ongoing cost. Maintenance costs are a big factor for mountain homes as there is more maintenance and higher costs than homes in the city. Lots to think about and I have time before I need to fully analyze all that. But I like the way you are looking at the financial aspects for a true second vacation home.
Fun Friday: Super Bowl LI Odds and Ends
My brother in law will be there, and better yet it’s not on his dime. He’s got some nice work perks…! I’ll be at home with friends. It’s always fun checking out the unique being lines for the game. No dog in the fight for me either so hopefully it’s a close one, I think it will be. Enjoy!
Senate Republicans Begin Repealing ObamaCare
Hi FS, I’m hopeful that any repeal and replace put through will have support from both sides of the aisle. The GOP was always critical of the Dems for how the ACA was passed without there support and it would be hypocritical to do that themselves now.
I’m a healthcare banker so have seen a lot of the ins and outs of ObamaCare. There’s definitely a lot more to it than the normal consumer sees, like the impact to insurance companies you mentioned. I’m skeptical of opening states up for cross-border competition, there’s a lot of hurdles to that working (although it sounds like a great idea).
I still have a few years before retirement and having to buy insurance in the open market so hopefully by then the dust will settle on all this and we’ll have a feasible option available!
2016 In Review: Looking Back Over the Past Year
It was a good year for us on many fronts. We had a good income year with no major expenses. 2015 was a more expensive year in that we replaced the roof, bought solar panels, bought a new car and I had lasik.
Besides the addition of a new kiddo expected in April, we’re hoping for another year of no major expenses and solid contributions to our investments.
Happy new year, FS!
Buying a Business Requires Life Changes
I’d take your time and keep searching for the business that you’d feel comfortable with because, like you said, it’ll be a life changing event. I know that was certainly the case for me when my siblings and I bought a business earlier in the year. And we couldn’t do it without each other’s help.
Also, we had been searching for years! We find a number of opportunities we’ve pursued but ultimately didn’t work out for one reason or another. But being picky pays off. The one we finally bought has turned out to be a good fit for everyone and we’ve been able to learn the business quickly and improve operations. Quite a process for sure! Keep persevering and you’ll find the right one for you.
